Nasi Lemak , Jalan Ipoh HSBC

Yes..I am a sucker for nasi lemak !!! And has been suffering during the last Ramadhac coz most of the stall are closed !!! Was surfing for good food when came across an article by FoodPoi recommending this nasi lemak and rated it as one of the best in KL , I ought to give it a try. There I was , on a fine Saturday morning drove to HSBC and get myself a pack and try...

Started off as a staple diet for the lower income , nasi lemak doesn’t need to be fancy and just need to have the basic condiments like hard boil egg, deep fried Ikan bilis (anchovies) , cucumber slices and sambal. Thats just the basic..but as our economy grows its more like nasi campur nowadays with countless adds on to make it a meal by itself.

Mine came with the highly recommended sambal sotong which I would say is normal , but the rendang is worth a try. WIth my high expectaion after reading Foodpoi's blog , I was kinda dissapointed as the rice was kinda soggy and the sambal rather tame in spiciness !! WOuld be better is the sambal is spicier !!! Overall for RM4 , it scores 7/10 and probably 8/10 if its spicier.

The stall starts at 7am and sold out before 9am. Off On Sunday.

Makan Makan Penang : Chee Cheung Chuk

This is definetely something not for the faint hearted. This would definetely makes it to fear factor is there is a Penang Challenge !

The porridge is so well cooked that not even a single grain of rice is visible. This shows that the porrodge is cooked under slow fire for few hours minimum to obtain this consistancy. The well flavoured porridge is topped with a mixture of charsiew , some boiled intestine and the star of the dish..fried pork intestine !! Sounds yummy isn’t it? Definately not for the faint hearted, then again it’s not really fear factor material.

Where to find it ??

The hawker center at New Lane/McCallister Road junction. Nearby Sunway hotel, Georgetown. Starts from 5pm onwards till sold out.

Makan Makan Penang :Heng Huat aka Lorong Selamat Char Kway Teow

So much has been said about this famous Char Kway Teow that no makan trip to Penang is complete without dropping by for a plate of it. So famous even you can find her in Garmins GPS map written as the Fat Diva in red cap which fried one of the most expensive CKT in Penang !!! With prices starting at RM7 a pop its rather pricy compares to others, but seing those huge prawns , you would feel that its worth the price you are paying.

The Char Kway Teow literally “fried flat noodles”, is The flat rice noodles are fried with prawns, cockles, egg, bean sprouts, Chinese chives, and chili paste fried over very high heat. The best Char Koay Teow is usually fried with pork lard, which gives that extra aroma to the dish.

The half an hour wait is worth it as we waited patiently for the plate to arrive. Steaming hot off the charcoal fired stove, the CKT is well flavoured from the sweetness of the huge prawns and we finished it in no time !!!

The wall adones with press cutting of the dancing mee goreng man . Blogs and prints outs accompanys him. Mahboob Zakaria's family has been frying and mee goreng for the past 81 years.

The noodles are not the usual mee goreng you would find in your neighbourhood mamak store, they are fried with a secret mix of chilli and tomato paste and a gravy made out of prawns stock and mashed sweet potatoes. accompanied with the usual prawn fritters , taukua , egg and sotong.
And yes..............its spicy !!!!!!!!!

The friendly chef isnt camera shy and shows off his unique frying skills with the wok , swirling the large pan furiously around the stove. And yes, he speaks fluent Hokkien too !

Lim Kee Fishball Noodle, Medan Putra , Kepong

I am not really a fishball noodle junkie until I've been introduced to this fish ball speciality shop by a friend of mine. What really makes me hook to this particular eatery is the soup. The soup is remarkably sweet and tasty, minus the lard oil and MSG. You can really taste the freshness in the soup stock ,coupled with some dried salted chinese mustard ( tung-choy) its heaven. In chinese noodle, the most important is the soup base..and it really determines whether the noodle makes it or beats it .

This eatery steadfastly refuses to use commercial fishballs. Instead he makes his own and you can taste the difference almost the instant you bite into the balls. The sweet flavour of sai-to fish is so deliciously satisfying, something you'd never find in over-the-counter fishballs. The fishballs aren't perfectly round in shape either as these are shaped by hand, not machine.

The standard bowl ( RM 3.80 /M 4,30 Large ) comes with 2 delicious saito fishball, few slices of fish cakes and a stuffed Tofu-pok.Beside that there is also an array of stuffed Yong Tau Fu ( 80 cents a piece ) available for the extras. For me,nothing beats the good school old fish ball noodles, minus all the fuss.

Tasty ???? Just look at my bowl...need I say more ?????

They also serves a mean curry laksa.

location : Jalan Medan Putra 3, Medan Putra, Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong, KL

Directions : From Kepong/Sg Buloh .If you are using LDP towards One-Utama direction, look out for the first left junction before the toll. After turning left you would come to a round about ( where Desa Park City ) take a 12 o clock turn. Then at the first 2nd junction turn left. then look out for Khalifah mamak turn left then at 2nd junction turn right. The restaurant is on your left.

Fatty House Mee Huen Kueh, Taman Berkerly, Klang

This is a popular noodle haunt with never ending stream of Mee Huen Kueh fans waiting patiently for their steaming hot Mee Huen Kueh . Be prepared to wait for half an hour or more if you are here during peak hour.

The noodles here are different from other Mee Huen Kueh stalls, as they are hand madeand hand teared and you can really taste and enjoy the smooth and chewy texture of the noodles cooked in a sweet ikan bilis stock with vegetables, meat slices, pork liver and egg, sprinkled with crunchy ikan bilis , gives it the extra bite. The soup is sweet and tasty, thanks to the large amount of ikan bilis used in preparing the stock, with no hints of msg. Just like the way I like, home cooked recipe without the fuss of other condiments like ground pork, mushroom etc.

The place is packed and the Mee Huen Kueh fans, doesnt seems to mind waiting 30-45 minutes for their favourite fix. So as a word of advice, be there early or late to avoid the 12.30-1.30 lunch crowd. Otherwise you can also buy uncooked noodles dough and stock to cook at home.

Another speciality is their signature barley and cincau drink. Which is really an unusual combination but once you tried it, youll ask for more !!

Serving starts at RM2.80 for a small serving to RM3.20 for an extra large serving and RM0.40 for egg.

19, Lebuh Bangau, Taman Berkerly,Klang.

Directions : From Federal Highway towards Klang direction , look out to Taman Berkerly sign board. At round about turn 3 o clock. Go straight pass a church on your left and you would see some shop houses on the right. Turn in and the shop is on your left after the cross junction.

Lai Foong Beef Noodles ,KL

A prominent landmark in the heart of Kuala Lumpur , this 56 years old kopitiam along Jalan Tun HS Lee bring you back down memory lane. The heart of this coffee shop lies in the beef noodle, which started in 1956 , now handles by its 2nd generation.

The man behind the beef noodles Thomas reveals that the recipe is based on a 80 year old recipe handed down from his grandfather Chou Jou , a Hainanese immigrant from China. His younger brother Daniel , who happens to be my friend, mans the coffee shop counter.

The sup is clear yet flavourful with salted chinese mustard ( ham choy ). Coupled with the tangy chili sauce its a match made in heaven, leaving you asking for more. In it is the yummy beef balls, tripe, offals and tendons all swimming among the noodle of choice, Lai Fun.

Hong Kong street foods

Another not to be miss in Hong Kong is its street foods. Found in abundance in street corners , it offers an inexpensive yet interesting way to explore Hong Kong.

Cart Noodles 车仔面

Cart noodle is a kind of à la carte noodle which became popular in Hong Kong in the 1950s through independent street vendors operating on roadsides and in public housing estates in low-income districts, using carts. Many street vendors have vanished but the name and style of noodle stays.

The noodles were considered "cheap and nasty". Cost was generally low to appeal to the average citizens. They were also commonly referred to as "filthy noodle" (嗱喳麵) due to its low hygiene in the past. When hygiene standards rose, many street vendors (licensed or otherwise) have vanished.

There are various of ingredients to chose from to customize your noodle. I've picked pigs blood jelly (豬紅 ) , pigs skin (豬皮) and beef brisket to go. Couples with the sweet stock made out of radish (蘿蔔) based , its out of this world !!

Braised beef offals

Another favourite street snacks is the beef spareparts ( ngau chap ). It may be a turn off for others, but it definetely turns me on !

Beef spareparts braising away in the sauce. Offals, lungs , stomach , basically almost all the cows innards are here !!!

Generally you can find this at street side stalls which normally operates out of corner shops. You can find this at almost every street corners in Mongkok area. They also offer numerous types of snacks to go. Braised, fried , BBQ , steamed, you name it, they have it.

Also some super spicy sea snails !!

For HKD15 a bowl..its a good deal.

Egg waffles ( KAI DAN CHAI ) 雞蛋仔

Another not to be missed is this cute little waffles made out of eggs. This small egg balls are egg waffles baked in a waffle pan which resembles a racket. Once cooked its golden brown on the outside and all you need to do it just tear of the chunk and savour !

Seafood, DAI PAI DONG style in Central

While strolling in Central wet market , we came across this popular eatery tucked somewhere in the back streets of Central wet market 中環街市 we came across this dai pai dong offering live seafood . Since its dinner time , we find out seats and never regretted. Located just beside the market , food cant be any fresher here.

Whats better than a hot mutton hotpot during winter ???? Mutton braised for hours in herbs and eaten hotpot style. Surprisingly the mutton doesnt have any gamey taste at all to it.

Salt and pepper mantis prawn.

Stir fried Flower snail

Sweet and soup pork, HK style

and.....deng deng Belachan fried kangkung in HK !! Yes and it taste quite well too !!

Its a great value for money , as the dinner for four of us only cost HKD410 inclusive of beers. Who say dining in HK can be expensive ???

LAN FONG YUEN milk tea

Another not to be missed experience is having the famous Si Mutt Nai Char 丝袜奶茶 . Even I'm not a tea drinker , I truly enjoyed this so much !! The black tea tea is brewed sweetedned with evaporated milk and later filtered thru ,panty hose , yes you read it correctly ladies panty hose !!

Lan Fong Yuen is established around 50 years ago as a "Dai Pai Dong"(street side food stall) in Central, and later turned into a "Tea Cafe", which is a prominent style of Hong Kong restaurants. With their delicious and popular food, the restaurant is crowned as "the most delicious tea cafe" by many people in Hong Kong.

Capitol Satay Celup, Melaka

I've visited 2 most popular satay celup place in Melaka , the first one is Ban Lee Hin at Jalan Ong Kim Wee, which I tried in 2008 and the other one is famed Bukit Cina’s Capitol Satay Celup, .which is popular with tourist local and abroad. The most notable difference is the sauce, which IMHO BLH one taste better.

Capitol satay sells by its 3rd generation status .

In the middle of the table is the pot of satay look alike peanut sauce. This is where you dip your selection in the pot ala luk-luk style. However the same pot of peanut sauce is used again and again .… Until theend of the day..or maybe next day ???

The taukeh-soh would come over to add extra peanut sauce and their secret blend chilli paste and ground peanut to give you the kick. The same pot for all customers throughout the night. So if hygenic is your top priority, give this a skip. Well, most of the best food isnt found in the most hygienic of places right ??

Purely self service ,the food are neatly displayed and you take whatever you want to eat. You will be charged for what you have ate by the sticks. In terms of selection , Captiol wins hands down for the really huge varieties and hygenically chilled . Rows of assorted fish / meat balls, vegetables, deep fried foochoks , seafoods and meats for you to choose from. BLH style is they serve you on a tray and pay what you eat.

After you eat more than a certain amount, they give you the bonuses, usually big prawns, pacific clams and some abalone lookalike . All this bonus are still charged at RM0.70 a stick. The usual large prawns cost RM60/kg. Good marketing strategy !!!.
